Martha was distracted with much serving…The Lord answered “Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but only one thing is necessary. Luke 10:40-42

I have heard it said that Busy is a pseudonym for Being Under Satan’s Yolk.  If the Devil can’t make you bad, he’ll make you busy.  Well it was working on me. I was tired, overwhelmed, and  bitter.

2019 took a toll on me.  I am a people pleaser, and want to make everyone happy, and in doing so I left no margin in my life

With three children in club sports, my life consisted of teaching during the day and being at practice or games during the evenings and weekends.  Commitments were made long before we knew the schedule, and I remember having a crying meltdown when I realized just what I had gotten myself into.

Suddenly there were no more home cooked meals, no days of rest, and no time for social gatherings.  There was just running at the speed of life, with no idea how to disembark. I knew I couldn’t continue this pace, because I was turning into a person I didn’t recognize. One that was bitter and unhappy, cynical and overwhelmed. I was going through the motions and forgetting what it was all for.

I am a Christian and love the Lord, yet I had placed too many things above him.  He had lost first place in my life, not because he was less important, but because I had allowed less important things to take precedence.  I stopped prioritizing Him.

Today we need to take a breath, find our priorities, and make time for what’s most important.

Jonny Diaz’s song states “lay down what’s good and find what’s best”. I had said yes to things that took me away from what I needed most.

Can you relate?  Do you find yourself too tired to get up and have quiet time with your God before your day begins?  Is God included in the decisions that you make? Do you stop and consider the things you have to be thankful for? Do you rush through your day without talking with him?

I have been there and it is a slippery slope, my friend.  One day turns into a week, and then a month, and suddenly our God can feel so distant.  Isn’t that what Satan wants?

God is never far. If it has been a while since you had a conversation or opened up his word to see what He has to say, take some time today.  He is good at bringing peace in the chaos, and calm in the storm.

Sometimes busyness still gets the best of me, but I try not to let it become a season.  I can gauge if busyness is getting the best of me, if it is taking me away from the most important things.  I use that gauge as a tool to not find myself back in a place where I didn’t have time for God.

Matt 11:28 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

  • Stacey, I really enjoyed this Devotional. Glad to know that I am not the only one struggles with making time with God. Thanks for sharing

  • Thank you for the feedback! I think Satan loves when we feel like we can’t share, because everyone else has their act together. We are not alone in our struggles. God gave us community, so we could support, learn, and grow from each other.
